The Swedish Government has announced their decision to extend the application period until
December 31st 2021, for British citizens and their family members.
The reason for the extension is that the government wants to give eligible British citizens who have not yet submitted their application, the opportunity to do so. This way, British citizens and their families get an additional three months to legalise their stay in Sweden. They have the right to continue living, working and studying in Sweden during this period, even if their intention is to not to file for residence status.
The Swedish Migration Agency recommends that anyone who wishes to apply for residence status, does so sooner rather than later, especially if a decision on residence status is needed by a certain date.
British citizens who already have permanent residency or Swedish citizenship do not need to submit an application for residence status, but anyone else wanting to remain in Sweden, need to submit an application before December 31st.
Our strong recommendation is for employers to follow up with their British employees to ensure they have or are in the process of submitting their application.
Please do not hesitate to contact us for further advise or assistance with this process.
Thank you!
