The Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) is currently experiencing prolonged processing times for work permit applications. Below, we have compiled the current reported processing times for different application types.
First Time Work Permit Application (application submitted while applicant is not in Sweden)
We expect to see a decision within 10-20 working days, provided that a complete application has been filed.
Work Permit Extension Application
We expect decisions to take 20-40 working days, again provided that the application is complete with all necessary information and documentation. Extensions cannot be filed more than 3 months prior to the expiration date of the current permit.
Change of Status Application
For applications to change employer or occupation, we expect to see decisions close to the start date, but it could take up to 20-40 working days. The Migration Agency will not take a decision prior to the employment start date. Applications cannot be filed more than 30 days prior to start date.
Permanent Residence Permit Application
These applications can take up to 90 working days for the Migration Agency to process. They will not make a decision prior to the expiration date of the current permit. Decisions will likely be made close to the expiration date, but it could also, as stated, take up to 90 working days. Applications cannot be filed more than 20 days prior to the expiration date.
PhD/Researcher Permit Application
These applications should be processed within 30-90 working days.
We will continue to monitor and update you on the processing times as and when we receive information from the Migration Agency.
We would also like to take this opportunity to encourage our clients to prepare and submit orders for extension that are getting close to their expiration date as soon as possible, as we expect there to be additional delays at the Migration Agency over the holidays.
Thank you!
