Immigration Insights – October Edition 2024

We hope you’re doing well! As we dive into October, we wanted to share some important updates regarding business immigration that you might find helpful.

Updates on the EU Blue Card Directive

The government bill on proposed changes was handed over to Parliament on September 24th. While most of the upcoming changes have been known for some time – the proposition also clarifies a few points that have been somewhat unclear during the legislative history of this new directive. Among them the question of permit length – it is now settled in the proposition that permits will be granted for a maximum of 24 months at a time.

A more welcome clarification is that the extended exemptions allowing more applicants to apply from within Sweden is combined with exemptions regarding the work permit. This means that an applicant that can apply for a EU-Bluecard from within Sweden will be allowed to work while the application is pending at the Migration Agency.

While this coming change will bring about many positive changes, the bill brings about a consensus that most of these benefits are for the employee but not necessarily the employer – in some aspects it might even be considered quite the opposite. For the full scoop on the new directive from the employers’ perspective – keep an eye out for an invite to a webinar in November.
